âMendoza wouldnât have let me go if we werenât okay.â Ayelish pulled a shirt over her damp hair and finished dressing after showering the blood an enemy drew off her body. âI promise. Iâm good now.â
âAye, you passed out in my arms.â
Ayelish held Witâs face in her hands and kissed him. âYou heard the doc. Adrenaline and hormone overload combined with dehydrationâ¦thatâs all it was.â
âYou hit your head, Aye.â
âYeah, I donât remember that happening. Thought the cut was from broken glass.â Ayelish shrugged and left the bathroom and sat on the bed of their bedroom to slip on shoes.
âThatâs the problem, darlinâ. You donât remember hitting your head.â
She tossed her hands in the air. âIt was chaotic out there. You should have seen it. Pure pandemonium. Itâs a wonder any of us remember our names, much less a bump to the head.â
âYou just ainât gonna listen, are you?â He helped her to her feet, assessing her balance.
Ayelish paused with her eyes turned up as she thought for a moment. âNope. Not listening. Mendoza said I was fine and gave me IV fluids. Iâm good. Besides, we arenât leaving the building, just heading to the Lair. Iâm not letting you do that by yourself.â
âIâm good. I just want you to be good too.â
âAnd I am, Wit.â She rested her hand on her belly. âWeâre good. You donât have to tell the team your story. Especially after todayâ¦â
âNo. Someone I admire ââ a brother ââ is lying in a bed upstairs fighting his way back to life because of something I somehow brought here.â Wit held her hand and walked down the hall to the living room with her. âWe have to figure this out. Before anyone else is hurt or, worse, killed. I canât have that hanginâ over me, Aye. I just canât. These people mean too much. I canât let them have my back without all the information they need to find and fight a ghost.â
Turning in his arms, Ayelish laid her head against his chest. âI know, baby. I know. You shouldnât have to carry any of this or fight the ghost either. Just promise me, youâll let them in.â
âI will. I canât live another day like today.â Wit bit his bottom lip. âNo more surprises. No more ghosts. Just answers and closure. Hopefully sharing with them what I shared with you last night might get us there.â
âOkay. Iâm right there next to you. The whole way,â Ayelish said. âWe both are.â
Wit took to one knee and braced himself by holding Ayelish by the hips and spoke to her belly. âIâm doinâ this for you too. Iâll always fight for you and your mama. Forever and ever. And I love you more than life, little one. More than anything.â
He looked up at Ayelish when her tear fell to his cheek, and he smiled at her before turning his attention back to her belly. âI love you. I love the both of you.â
His kissed her flat stomach and gently rested
